I feel that staying at the same hospital all year has a lot of advantages. You don't spend so much time finding your way around and getting to know people and the medical staff seem to invest more into people who stay longer as they can see some return too. Especially in the 5th year when you are expected to present on the ward rounds, do FY1 jobs, get valuable feedback being part of a team is really important. With Kings being so big and the hospitals so variable I can see how this wouldn't work from a practical point of view, as quality of teaching differs enormously and you might be stuck in a remote DGH all year. There would have to be some element of choice or ability to swap places similar to FY1 posts.

Remaining in one hospital has it's advantages, however I firmly believe they are outweighed by the disadvantages. The fact is that we are being trained to be Doctors who can apply our knowledge and skills in a diverse range of challenging circumstances. Being able to adapt to different rountines, enviroments and local policies is a crucial skill that must be acquired through hard work and experience.
I do believe KCLSM has issues to address when it comes to integration and consistency of integration of medical students into the healthcare team but I don't think by providing students with one hospital actually solves this.

I think that moving around hospitals gives us a chance to not only meet more of our year, it also gives us a chance to experience different types of hospitals (how they run, the different staff and teaching styles) so as to appreciate their pros and cons. I feel that this even helps to inform decisions about F1 application destinations.

just as you've settled into one hospital and found your feet, you're swiftly moved on again. i'm with staying in the same one all year - the med school year is too big to meet everyone anyway, you might as well just get along with your hospital and get to know the teaching and admin staff better.

I've personally really enjoyed being at a variety of hospitals. It's given me a good insight into the different ways medicine can be practised and hospitals can be run. Nowhere's perfect, but by moving around we get a balanced experience, something that would be lost were we at just one site for the whole year. Similarly, though a whole year in a central teaching hospital may be acceptable three rotations at a peripheral hospital would be at best a hard sell for a London medical school.

It would however have been nice to know at the start of the year where I'd be for all three rotations.

It has been really great knowing where we will be for year 5 so far in advance. It would have been much better in years 3 and 4 if we could have known our placements for the year upfront instead of only a few weeks before each new placement started.

I think 3/ year is more valuable.

1. It could be potentially very unfair for people placed at hospitals which are indconvenient for an entire year.
2. There is a lot more to learning what it is like to be a doctor than just our academic or even clinical studies. I consider learning how different hospitals function to be a key part of that.
3. Socially it is nice to meet different people on each rotation, especially given our large year group.

I expect that the people who want to stay in one place all have special circumstances which would let them have a central London hospital anyway. I can't really see why anyone else would run the risk of being placed away from their home, home campus and friends for an entire year.

Staying in the same hospital for a year will disadvantage students in the long run. It takes away the opportunity to meet other students and to experience different hospitals. In medicine, the art of being able to integrate quickly into new situations is essential and by staying in the "safe zone" we won't be challenged to develop this skill. Moving around helps us to get used to approaching new members of staff e.g. nurses/junior doctors/consultants- the scary ones and the not so scary ones.

Also, staying in the same place is great if things are going well but if things are not e.g. dis-organised timetable, disputes with friends/firms then moving on is a breath of fresh air in what otherwise would be a very stressful year.

All at one hospital would be a nightmare. The year groups are huge, and combined with the mixed bag of hospital quality there would inevitably be winners and losers. It's bad enough that some people get rotations they hate and virtually no say in them. I had Medway first rotation 3rd year. This nearly broke me, and if it had been for the entire year I would have probably left medical school. The bitter pill of a bad placement (bad for whatever reason - distance, teaching quality etc) is made slightly sweeter by being only for a term and with other better rotations throughtout the year.
