Name: Shawki El-Ghazali

iBSC: Regenerative Medicine and Innovative Technology

When are you intercalating: Between MBBS 4 and 5

Where: Guy’s campus

iBSC Summary: In this iBSC we a learn about the kind of materials they use in medicine, such as in prosthetics and joint replacement. We also learn a bit about stem cells and how imaging devices work (such as microscopes). In the innovative technology part of the course we learn about inventing a medical device and how to set up a small business for it.
There are 3 core modules and an additional lab project. It’s pretty different to what I’ve done so far in medicine, so it can be a bit of a challenge sometimes!

Last lecture you had: My most recent lecture was for the innovative technology module and we were taught how to come up with a cash flow for our business. This is basically a big table which takes into account how much you predict you’ll spend and earn over a certain time period. It was very interesting although unfortunately required extensive use of Excel – of which my skills are limited!

Name: Melanie D’Costa

iBSC: Medical Education

When are you intercalating: Between MBBS 3 and 4

Where: Whitechapel Campus, Barts and the London (QMUL)

iBSC Summary: In this BSc, we cover Educational Theory (which is suprisingly interesting), a module focusing on designing curricula and a practical module on teaching, where we give lectures, lead PBL groups and teach communication and clinical skills. The 4 core modules are assessed by coursework and exams, which are finished by February. From March to May, the focus is on the Research Project – most of my group are carrying out qualitative projects involving interviews or focus groups with students/teachers within the Medical School.

Last lecture you had: No lectures (thankfully!) as we’re taught mainly through PBL and Small Group Teaching. My last session involved leading an MBBS 1 group in their PBL on GI Physiology – quite a struggle to teach a subject I barely remember from Year 2, but a good way to put the skills I’ve learnt to practical use!
